U.S. Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) introduced legislation Thursday week to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and protect more wilderness in Southern California.

A bill that would add more than 100,000 acres of federal forest land to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, while also expanding wilderness zones to further protect threatened species, was introduced in U.S. Congress on Thursday, May 25.

The San Gabriel Mountains loom like an impregnable fortress for millions of migrating birds making their long and perilous journey to distant breeding grounds in the far north.
The effort I’m advocating for is championed by Senator Alex Padilla, Representative Judy Chu, and a coalition of local advocates and community organizations. We are asking President Biden to use the Antiquities Act to add 109,000 acres to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument to permanently protect these special lands.
“The Biden administration and Gov. Gavin Newsom have committed the nation and our state to this ambitious “30×30” goal. Expanding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument to include 109,000 acres of public lands in the Angeles National Forest will help contribute to this goal.”
